Early Life & Education

Sanjiv Bajaj was born into the Bajaj family and is the great-grandson of founder Jamnalal Bajaj as well as the younger son of Bajaj Group chairman Rahul Bajaj. He finished his education in a Catholic convent school operated by Swiss missionaries. He then attended the University of Pune for his mechanical engineering degree, the University of Warwick for his master’s degree in manufacturing systems engineering, and Harvard Business School for his management degree. Sanjiv is married to Shefali Bajaj, and they have two children.

About Professional Career

Sanjiv started his career at Bajaj Auto in 1994. During his time with Bajaj Auto, Sanjiv held a variety of positions, including leading the finance, legal, and international business operations. He was credited for introducing American-style supply chain management to Bajaj Auto by emulating General Motors. He now serves as a non-executive director of Bajaj Auto.

Following the demerger of Bajaj Auto in 2007, Sanjiv became the managing director of Bajaj Finserv. In 2012, he was appointed chairman of Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, vice chairman of Bajaj Finance, and managing director of Bajaj Holdings & Investment Limited. Under his tenure, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance became the second-most profitable insurance firm in India by 2017.

For the 2018–19 fiscal year, Sanjiv served as the vice chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Western Region. In addition, he was chosen as head of the CII Western Region for 2019–20. He was voted as CII’s vice president for 2020–21. He was voted as the CII’s President Designate for 2021–22 in June 2021. In May 2022, he was elected President of the CII for the period 2022–23.

He is the current chairman and managing director of Bajaj Finserv. In May 2022, he was reappointed as managing director for another five years.
